Client: Hungarian Handball Federation (MKSZ)
Status: Invitational tender – rejected.
Handball is Hungary’s most popular indoor team sport, boasting a high-standard national league, consistently outstanding international results, and a century-long tradition.
TASK
In the spring, I received an honorable invitation to tender from the Hungarian Handball Federation to create the foundational visual identity and brand identity for Hungarian Handball Sport.
The goal was to design the cornerstones of a system that is well-applicable and effectively communicates across all platforms. This new identity needs to be authentic and comprehensible, applicable across the entire spectrum influenced by Hungarian Handball—from the federation through the national leagues and national teams to the fans at home or in the sports halls.
A crucial requirement for the new brand appearance was to depict the sport and national identity in the simplest and most practical way possible.
APPROACH
Based on the research background, I determined two main strategic and conceptual foundations:
1.) Handball in Hungary is part of the national identity
2.) Hungarian Handball can be a sports brand in itself
Starting from these points, I designed a modular symbol system that can cover the entire brand both vertically and horizontally.
In the symbol, national identity and belonging are represented by a national flag. From the movement of the flag’s stripes, a schematic figure playing handball emerges. The 21.5-degree tilted straight line gives a waving momentum to the brand mark in both horizontal and vertical directions, just like a flag waving in the wind.
When defining the brand, we focused on the most elementary component of the team: the individual. Determination, struggle, and perseverance are virtues that truly make an athlete great. These are moods, moments, and complex impressions that we all experience.
